Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Stone Town, part of Zanzibar City, is an old trade center, with mosques and winding lanes.
Zanzibar a partly self-governing state in Tanzania; it’s not an independent country. The archipelago was once the separate state of Zanzibar, which united with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous within the union, with its own government.
This is one of the safest African destinations, even for solo female travelers. Tourism and spice farming forms a major part of Zanzibar’s economy and is referred to as the Spice Islands, due to the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper that are grown there.
The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season from June to October. This also coincides with safari high season in Tanzania, making the Zanzibar Archipelago a very popular post-safari choice.
